Statement of Qualifications

Beth Williams and Michael Chandler work together as business and life partners and both bring a depth of experience and enthusiasm to ensure that clients receive the best advice possible throughout the design and construction process. Michael founded Chandler Design-Build in 1987 and Beth joined as principal designer in 2002. Beth earned her degree in Environmental Design in Architecture from the NCSU School of Design in 1987. She has experience both in the field as a framing and trim carpenter and at the drafting table working in architectural firms. Her designs are also informed functionally by her work experience in professional kitchens and aesthetically by five years living in Japan and traveling throughout Asia. All of the projects in our Portfolio Page are her designs.

Michael has been working in the construction industry since 1976 and has been on the leading edge of building science education, helping establish codes and educating builders in best practices in the industry. He has earned Plumbing and General Contracting licenses as well as Certified Graduate Builder, Aging-In-Place, and Master Green Professional designations from the NAHB University of Housing.

Michael volunteered with the NAHB Home Innovation Research Center to help create the National Green Building Standard, with the local Home Builders Association to establish their High-Performance Building Council to implement a credible third-party certification process and he also worked with the Orange County Building Inspections Department during the 2010 IRC code revision cycle to update the building code on conditioned crawlspaces to reflect more current building science on indoor air quality. His suggested text is now a part of the building code, joining the work of his great grandfather which is part of the plumbing code to this day.

He was a founding member of Green Building Advisor and a contributer to Fine Homebuilding Magazine. He has taught project management and building science courses for the NAHB University of Housing and has spoken widely at industry conferences and events. He recently worked with the NAHB Research Center to help the group assembled to assist the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the creation of the Residential Resiliency Guidelines for Builders & Developers.

Michael has recently retired from hands-on construction management to focus on his role with Beth in Chandler Design-Build.
